What is Llama?

  1. Meta's LLaMA (Large Language Model Meta AI) is a series of autoregressive large language models introduced by Meta AI in February 2023. The latest version, LLaMA 3.1, was released in July 2024.


  2. The Vision Behind LLaMA : To create a series of language models that could advance the field of artificial intelligence while addressing key challenges faced by researchers and developers. As AI models grew in complexity and size, Meta recognized the need for models that could handle increasingly sophisticated language tasks without requiring exorbitant computational resources. Thus, the LLaMA series was born, aiming to strike a balance between performance and accessibility.


  3. The LLaMA models come in various sizes, ranging from 7 billion to 405 billion parameters. While the initial release was as a foundation model, subsequent versions, starting with LLaMA 2, included instruction fine-tuned variants. With the release of LLaMA 3, Meta integrated these models into Facebook and WhatsApp in select regions, as well as a standalone website, enhancing services with virtual assistant capabilities.



  4. Open-Sourc: allowing researchers and developers to utilize and fine-tune them for various applications, fostering innovation and transparency in AI research.
